Search Engine Marketing, also known as SEM, is the process of promoting a website in various ways to create more visibility within the major search engines. Among the various methods used to achieve increased search engine visibility, higher rankings and ultimately more targeted visits, the two major methods are SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and PPC (Pay Per Click) which is also known as CPC (Cost Per Click). PPC / CPC is paid advertising.

The other side of Search Engine Marketing involves purchasing traffic from the search engines via the paid ads you see at the top of the search engine results pages as well as on the the side of the search engine results pages. These ads are also know as “sponsored pages, links or listings”. This method of Search Engine Marketing produces instant traffic, but running a successful PPC / CPC campaign can be very tricky; there are many intricate nuances to consider and manage within the process.
